Raku fired - an intense process where the glazed pot is removed from the kiln while red hot and placed into sawdust which instantly ignites in the heat. The pot is immediately covered to exclude oxygen. Localised reduction happens in absence of oxygen which leads to the typical colours associated with raku. The crash cooling of the pot from 1000 degrees creates thermal shock crazing all over the glaze surface which is stained by the smoke and is further highlighted with Indian ink . The process happens at a relatively low temperature - 1000 degrees - so the pots are slightly porous like a flowerpot. To make them waterproof all are lined with black liquid rubber.
