Contemporary and Country (C&C) present contemporary art and handmade objects by established artists and makers based in the east of England in pop-up exhibitions at non-gallery spaces, that celebrate our rural surroundings.
The artists and makers we display live and work in rural locations, often including the natural world in their subject matter or production process. Together they bring about a closer understanding of the countryside and the people that live there. They look creatively beyond the passing trend and encourage greater consideration for nature, as its appreciation and preservation becomes ever more prescient to our time.

RIVER'S EDGE
Current exhibition at BallroomArts, Aldeburgh, 7 to 19 June 2022There are new paintings by Kate Giles exploring the Nar and Bure River valleys in the first floor Ballroom. Complementing these new landscapes are new sculpture by Jack Wheeler and Beth Groom and a selection of bird sculptures by the late Emily Mayer. The second component on the ground floor Courtyard Gallery, is a group exhibition of artists and makers with a strong connection to East Anglia and its coastal landscape. Their work encompasses the coastal environment and creative use of natural materials in the art and handmade objects they make.

AVANT GARDENERS
Celebrating the horticultural and cultivated landscape behind and beyond the garden wallAvant Gardeners is at the Stables at Houghton Hall from 1 May to 25 September 2022. The exhibition celebrates the horticultural and cultivated landscape behind and beyond the garden wall. While we cannot reflect the full diversity of East Anglia’s horticultural heritage, the art and objects encompassed by it shows how artists and makers take their ideas from the garden, the seasonal cycle, plants, harnessing natural processes that encourage decomposition or conservation and explores how nature can be ‘improved upon’.

Avant Gardeners and The Vasseur Baltic Artists' Award 2022
Supporting International Arts CommissionsThe VASSEUR BALTIC ARTISTS’ AWARD was established in April 2022, in memory of the late Isabel Vasseur (1942-2021), a remarkable champion for commissioning contemporary art for the public realm. Isabel was a lecturer as well as a public art consultant inspiring a generation of curators and many artists. She encouraged artists to produce their best work for public spaces, the built environment, gardens and green spaces. Early in her career Isabel set the creative direction of two of the National Garden Festivals, Glasgow 1988 and then Gateshead in 1990, that spearheaded the cultural regeneration of these two former industrial areas. She commissioned local and internationally acclaimed artists to create installations along the banks of the River Clyde and Tyne, attracting huge numbers of visitors. It is therefore appropriate that the Avant Gardeners exhibition honours the memory of this influential and dynamic advocate for the arts by directing financial contributions to the award this year.

We would like to thank the artist, John Locker, her husband for following through on Emily's initial commitment to the exhibition and allowing us access to her archive, to display a small selection of bird sculptures.
