Contemporary and Country (C&C) present contemporary and applied art by artists and makers from East Anglia.C&C's Pop-Up exhibitions frequently forego the art gallery setting, opting for architecturally interesting non-gallery spaces that encourage visitors to engage with art. The artists and makers C&C work with live and work in the towns and villages scattered throughout the east of England. Through their work they celebrate their rural surroundings, bring about a closer understanding of the countryside, encouraging greater consideration for nature, as its appreciation and preservation becomes ever more prescient to our time.

ARRIVING IN THE AUTUMN
Lay of the Land
East Anglian Landscape NowMORE ABOUT LAY OF THE LAND25 September to 26 October 2024
Lay of the Land will be an exhibition celebrating the features that make the East Anglian landscape so distinctive. It will encompass recent work by artists and makers who show us why the east of England has maintained an enduring appeal among present day creative minds, how the landscape is changing, and the way it is represented in material terms in the work they produce.

Gallery Visit: Jayne Ivimey & Andrew Watkinson at Cromer Artspace
The Hands of Time: A response to 200 years of coastal change 11 to 22 July 2024 Jul 23, 2024Post lockdown Jayne Ivimey and Andrew Watkinson have been working together, following in the footsteps of nineteenth-century landscape artist James Stark*, who accessed hard to reach places along the Norfolk coast between Sheringham and Lowestoft two hundred years ago, recording what they found at each location, now. The exhibition at Cromer Artspace collates their research which has been thoughtfully compiled and clearly displayed within the long space of this pretty Deco gallery, tucked in under the cliff at the end of the Cromer Prominade. -

The Dockside Dandies of Lowestoft
Peter Wylie presents a tale of fashionable fishermen in his new book 10 June, 2024Lowestoft born artist Peter Wylie discovered this fascinating fashion movement among the town's fishermen back in 2007. The research and interviews undertaken by Wylie has now resulted in a newly published book. This is both an historic record and narrative on the Dandies - in their own words based on personal experiences in the late 1950s and early 1960s. More and more fashionable fishermen were given the nickname of the Dockside Dandies. -

Gallery Visit: Issam Kourbaj, Urgent Archive
Kettle's Yard, Cambridge 2 March to 26 May 2024 April 15, 2024Issam Koubaj is an example of an artist from another culture, in this case Syria, taking a long, hard look at their own country. This moving installation Urgent Archive at Kettle’s Yard Cambridge is taking place in his adopted ‘home town’. Koubaj has been resident in the UK since 1990, and while initially educated in Damascus he has used his natural ability to communicate across several languages as well as visually as an artist by immersing himself in higher education. He works as an artist, lecturer and writer at Cambridge University. -

Gallery Visit: Frank Auerbach, The Charcoal Heads
The Courtauld Institute, London 9 Feb to 27 May Mar 24, 2024We visited The Courtauld Institute on a recent trip to London to see The Charcoal Heads exhibition by Frank Auerbach, at Somerset House. The exhibition has been heavily trailed on social media. Auerbach’s gimlet gaze stares out from his 1958 self-portrait on the poster. For such a concise exhibition, it packs a punch. It consists of just two rooms of potent charcoal portraits made early in the artist’s career between the late 50s and early 60s. -

Rosie Phillips meets with visitors to discuss her paintings 8 February 2024Having applied and been offered places at University to study Fine Art, Rosie took stock of her options. She realised that Art School was not what she really wanted at that time. She had already reached out to a number of local artists in and around Norwich and North Norfolk. She entered into informal mentoring arrangements with these successful artists who could encourage, challenge and champion her. -
