This viewing room exhibition brings together recent work by Suffolk-based artists Liz Taunt, Jonathan Clarke and Steven Will. They are well-established artists whose distinct practices are based squarely upon the processes that have engaged them for many years: printmaking, cast metal sculpture and ceramics. The visual language they have developed as individuals prioritise the familiar, celebrating the everyday through the distillation of their subject, stripping away ornamentation and unnecessary distraction.
Based in Bungay, Liz Taunt works in a number of techniques including drypoint, lino, collagraph, monoprint and collage. Her experimental approach embraces the unexpected, creating abstract forms and invented visual ciphers that sit somewhere between imagination and everyday experience.
Jonathan Clarke works primarily in sand-cast aluminium, creating unique abstract sculptures that reference the figure and architecture. Raised in Suffolk and apprenticed to his father, sculptor Geoffrey Clarke RA, Jonathan has exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally. His work draws on social, spiritual and mythological themes, with influences ranging from Eduardo Chillida and Anthony Caro to Robert Motherwell and Mark Rothko.
Based near Orford on the Suffolk coast, Steven Will’s practice is rooted in a close connection to the natural landscape. Locally sourced beach clays, Coralline Crag, fossils, wood ash and plants become integral to his ceramics and printmaking. This new body of work being shown at Woolmarket House are very textural and based on the Suffolk landscape, impacted by erosion, decomposition and accretion. Originally trained in botany and later a market gardener, Steven brings an experimental, materials-led approach to his work, continually developing new processes and ways of working.
