About the Glass Beaded Paintings and Kernel Sculptures
 
Through this body of work I contemplate how we interpret the materiality of images experienced predominantly online. Reinterpreting blurred impressions of slow loading images, I use small component gestures to build up a surface and pattern which evoke the digital pixel.  Slow and mindful, the tactile, repetitive process of making these intricate woven glass works is the antithesis of the fast scroll of online viewing; the work in turn providing a tactile and tangible interpretation of the mediated online experience.
 
Impressionist painting and Pointillism influence how I look at and hue, tone and colour.  Visually scanning an image with forensic detail for colour and hue the meditative repetition of adding each bead creates an impressionist mood of the source image.
 
The glass beads are cellular, with volume and texture which has found purpose and meaning in the surface of my ceramics.  The delicate edges of the Kernel Sculptures are articulated with a beadlike form, suggesting the growth of matter and volume.  Both conceptually and materially the ceramic pieces take on new life.  Connotations of cellular growth, a microscopic view of a moment of interaction with the material body is expressed through subtle shifts of tone and orderly grids of texture.
