Steven's smoked vessels are made of porcelain and fired in a kiln at a lower temperature than normal to create the conditions to allow for the smoking effect. Being fired at a lower temperature means that the  fired vessel is porous and in order to reseal and make them water tight Steven pours a liquid rubber inside the vessels in a variety of colours thereby resealing them that enable the vessel to hold water.

All of Steven’s work starts with walking - integrating landscape and a sense of place. Out on the marshes, heaths and in the woods, he collects interesting finds and records the landscape through photography, print making and drawing. Found muds and clays are dug, washed, sieved, dried and ground to a powder. When combined with wood ash from bonfires and wood burners and transformed by the heat of the kiln, delicate and site-specific glazes are formed, each telling a tale. Steven moved away from a career as a scientist and took an Art Foundation Course in Brighton and then gained a Ceramics Diploma at London City Lit, London.
