Contemporary and Country (C&C) present contemporary and applied art by artists and makers from East Anglia.C&C's Pop-Up exhibitions frequently forego the art gallery setting, opting for architecturally interesting non-gallery spaces that encourage visitors to engage with art. The artists and makers C&C work with live and work in the towns and villages scattered throughout the east of England. Through their work they celebrate their rural surroundings, bring about a closer understanding of the countryside, encouraging greater consideration for nature, as its appreciation and preservation becomes ever more prescient to our time.

Leading the way into the Lay of The Land
Seven painters who explore the East Anglian region Oct 11, 2024The show includes some well-known as well as some less experienced landscape painters who treat the coastal reaches of Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex as an uplifting experience, and not as flat and uneventful as East Anglia's reputation suggests! Each represents their own vision of how distinctive individual components of the coast can be, as the shore unfolds mile by mile. -
Ceramic sculptors and makers in Lay of The Land
Breaking down the boundaries between contemporary and applied art Oct 2, 2024One of the key components for C&C’s latest exhibition Lay of the Land and the reason so many visitors have praised the quality of the work in the exhibition is the significant contribution made by artists and makers working in ceramics. -
Gallery Visit: Fliss Cary and Tracee Findlater, Something Grim
The Halesworth Gallery, Suffolk 27 July to 21 August Aug 2, 202427 July to 21 August Fliss Cary and Tracee Findlater, Jack Crampton, and Sally Erb at Halesworth Gallery. Fliss Cary uses charcoal or pen and ink drawings to respond to the landscape she is familiar with around her district on the perimeter of Norwich. Hedgerows attract her attention, being both barriers as well as homes to small creatures and birds. Hostile and yet sheltering. -
Gallery Visit: Jayne Ivimey and Andrew Watkinson, The Sands of Time
A response to 200 years of coastal change 11 to 22 July 2024 at Cromer Artspace Jul 23, 2024Post lockdown Jayne Ivimey and Andrew Watkinson have been working together, following in the footsteps of nineteenth-century landscape artist James Stark*, who accessed hard to reach places along the Norfolk coast between Sheringham and Lowestoft two hundred years ago, recording what they found at each location, now. The exhibition at Cromer Artspace collates their research which has been thoughtfully compiled and clearly displayed within the long space of this pretty Art Deco gallery, tucked in under the cliff at the end of the Cromer Prominade. -
The Dockside Dandies of Lowestoft
Peter Wylie presents a tale of fashionable fishermen in his new book 10 June, 2024Lowestoft born artist Peter Wylie discovered this fascinating fashion movement among the town's fishermen back in 2007. The research and interviews undertaken by Wylie has now resulted in a newly published book. This is both an historic record and narrative on the Dandies - in their own words based on personal experiences in the late 1950s and early 1960s. More and more fashionable fishermen were given the nickname of the Dockside Dandies. -

Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery June 1, 2024I attended the public launch of the Roger Ackling exhibition Sunlight, at the Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery on Friday. There is a new book, Sunlight, published to accompany the exhibition, which will be touring to Henry Moore Institute Leeds and Pier Arts Centre Orkney in Scotland in 2025. -

Gallery Visit: Frank Auerbach, The Charcoal Heads
The Courtauld Institute, London 9 Feb to 27 May Mar 24, 2024We visited The Courtauld Institute on a recent trip to London to see The Charcoal Heads exhibition by Frank Auerbach, at Somerset House. The exhibition has been heavily trailed on social media. Auerbach’s gimlet gaze stares out from his 1958 self-portrait on the poster. For such a concise exhibition, it packs a punch. It consists of just two rooms of potent charcoal portraits made early in the artist’s career between the late 50s and early 60s. -
