Landscape, both external and internal, is a unifying thread. From Melanie Goemans’ meditations on the fleeting rhythms of trees and stems, to Mary Blue and Claire Cansick’s visceral responses to coastal environments, the natural world becomes a site of reflection, movement and psychological depth. Caroline Chouler-Tissier similarly engages with place, examining how rural landscape can hold both trauma and solace.
Materiality is central throughout. Cecilia Willis and James Evans foreground the physical presence of ceramic form, Willis through the generous simplicity of the bowl and luminous glaze, and Evans through sculptural surfaces that invite a haptic gaze. In painting, gesture and surface carry equal weight, whether through Blue’s expressive mark-making or Cansick’s layered evocations of the sea.
Together, these exhibitions reflect the core ethos of the Viewing Room series: an intimate encounter with contemporary practice that foregrounds process, touch, and the emotional charge embedded within material and form.
